Imposing mountain peaks and glaciers surround the sunny, wind-protected Engadin holiday and high- altitude spa resort of Pontresina.

Whether ice climbing, ski touring or snowshoe trekking, from its position at the foot of the Bernina Massif, Pontresina offers a magnificent view of the highest peaks in the eastern Alps, such as the Piz Palü and the Piz Bernina, and is an ideal departure point for mountain climbers.

Cross-country skiers also like to drop in here for a visit – the famous Marathon route runs virtually through the village. Moreover, Pontresina is regarded as one of Switzerland's top curling centres. The San Spiert ski area, with its slopes and its toboggan run, is perfect for families, while the rather more challenging downhill runs on the Diavolezza are better suited to proficient athletes.

And those who favour the romantic touch should not miss a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-laden larch forests to the Val Roseg. Maps
