The story of Silvaplana

The Julier Pass was already an important crossing point in ancient times. But, as visitors to the village of Silvaplana can see, the houses are not very old. The village proper was located in sunny, sheltered Surlej; Silvaplana housed only the muleteers and servants. In 1793, however, Surlej was destroyed by a big landslide that covered the land around. This catastrophe sealed the decline of the village – until the Corvatsch ski area was opened up with construction of the cable car (1963). This brought new life to Surlej – and ever since, more and more people have settled here.
