The story of Zuoz
The original Bronze Age settlement here was located on the hill of Chastlatsch, above the Hotel Castell of today. At the time of its first written mention at the beginning of the 9th century, Zuoz already occupied its current position. In 1499 the village burned to the ground. As it has been spared from fire since, it is home to an exceptional number of historic buildings, and has been declared a village of national importance. Zuoz’s impressive appearance, with its grand houses, reflects the leading role it played until the 19th century. The imposing square in the village centre dates from the 16th century; the Landsgemeinde assembly for the Upper Engadin was held here until 100 years ago. This village of 1,200 souls may have a strong sense of tradition, but time has not stood still here. To the contrary: Zuoz has developed in winter into a family ski area that is as pleasant as it is extensive, well equipped to meet the needs of the future.
