UNESCO World Heritage site

Spectacular viaducts, mysterious winding tunnels, sophisticated engineering structures – all blending harmoniously into the spectacular, rugged landscape: covering 122 spectacular kilometres from Thusis via St. Moritz to Tirano, the Albula–Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway leads over 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and past 20 villages. The world-famous highlight along the route is the 65m high Landwasser Viaduct, built out of dark limestone, near Filisur. At its steepest point, the train masters an inclination of 70mm per metre without the aid of cogwheel technology. In 2008, UNESCO added the "Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscape" to its list of world heritage sites, making the Rhaetian Railway only the third railway worldwide to be considered "universally outstanding" by UNESCO.

An especially uplifting experience is the full-moon ride up to Alp Grüm, where a glacier fondue is served at an altitude of 2,091 metres (6,860ft) above sea level. On the return journey to St. Moritz, the lights in the train are switched off, and passengers ride to the sounds of classical music, serenaded by the sublime views.
