Swiss Solar Award 2011 for Bergbahnen Engadin St. Moritz AGOn 10 October 2011, the Swiss Solar Agency presented the 21st Swiss Solar Award at a ceremony in Geneva attended by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey. This year's prize-winners featured Bergbahnen Engadin St. Moritz AG twice over: the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl walked off with not only the highly-coveted Swiss Solar Award 2011 in the Building Renovation category, but also the PlusEnergieBau® (PEB) Solar Award 2011, the only prize in the world for buildings that generate more energy than they need themselves. The 104-year old Berghotel Muottas Muragl demonstrates that first-class hotel comfort can be implemented within the framework of a plus-energy building concept even at 2,456 metres above sea level. In addition, the Swiss Solar Agency praised the fact that the expansion and renovation of the hotel has led to a 64% reduction in its overall energy consumption, dropping from 436,000 kWh/a to 157,400 kWh/a. Also positively received was the fact that the previous annual energy requirements of approx. 40,000 litres of heating oil and 36,600 kWh/a of household and operating electricity are now entirely covered by solar energy, and that CO2 emissions have been reduced by 144 tonnes per annum and thus also by 100%.
