Pontresina
Dramatic peaks and glaciers frame the sunny, sheltered resort with its picturesque alleys, making this a popular base for ice climbers, ski tourers and snowshoeing fans. Cross-country skiers enjoy coming here, too: the route of the famous Engadin Ski Marathon leads virtually through the village. Pontresina is also one of the great curling centres of Switzerland.
Families value the San Spiert ski area with its attractive slopes and toboggan run, while the Diavolezza offers a spectacular range of thrilling challenges.
For romance, nothing beats a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through snow-blanketed forests of Swiss stone pine deep into the Val Roseg.
Train enthusiasts, meanwhile, can board the celebrated Bernina Express in Pontresina, to explore the UNESCO World Heritage lines of the Rhaetian Railway.
There is plenty of activity, too, at the Rondo, the highest conference and cultural centre in Europe, which stages meetings, conferences and a host of other events throughout the year.
