Authentic and with Roman roots

Long ago, S-chanf was known as a stop for muleteers; today it is famous as the goal for cross-country skiers taking part in the Engadin Ski Marathon. Families, especially, enjoy a wonderfully peaceful experience of winter here.

The intact historic heart of the village radiates an irresistible authentic charm; of the 700 inhabitants, half speak Romansh; and all cherish a local culture that is strongly aware of its Latin roots. The natural landscape on the doorstep is so special it has been protected in grand style: as the Swiss National Park. But while S-chanf, as gateway to the park, has grown in importance for tourism in the Engadin over recent decades, the village has maintained its relaxed sense of tradition.

In winter, the community takes great pride in its role as finish point of the Engadin Ski Marathon – and, indeed, in welcoming guests throughout the season. It also makes a fine base for exceptionally diverse cross-country ski tours – such as the enchanting forest trail to Zernez.
