The mystic resort
Sils is said to abound in natural earth energy, or life force – and that you can even measure it. By why bother, when you are bewitched anyway by the magic of the landscape at first sight?
Writers such as Nietzsche, artists like Beuys and musicians including David Bowie all drew inspiration from the wide-open spaces here and the magical light.
Idyllically located between two frozen lakes, the village also stands at the entrance to the romantic Val Fex. The most beautiful way to explore this is in a horse-drawn sleigh or carriage – but Sils also makes a perfect base for hikes and winter walks, too, through the expansive, sun-blessed landscape that stretches out at the foot of the local mountain, the Furtschellas. From here, it’s a short ride higher still up to the Corvatsch, and the highest cable car station in the Eastern Alps (3,303m/10,837ft). And from here in turn, 120 kilometres (75 miles) of glorious piste lead back down to the valley.
