Winter Season 2018/19

St. Moritz, 9. November 2018 – During the winter season of 2018/19 new Gault Millau Awards indulge connoisseurs and St. Moritz hotels delight their guests with new rooms and suites. Art lovers can look forward to even more exhibitions as of December and the international Hauser & Wirth gallery is now also stationed in St. Moritz. The AUDI FIS Ski World Cup St. Moritz (8.-9.12.2018) excites with a parallel slalom race on Corviglia right at the beginning of the winter season and early risers experience the Piz Nair Sunrise for the first time surrounded by a snow-covered mountain panorama.

New awards
26 restaurants in and around St. Moritz have been awarded a total of 382 Gault Millau points and six Michelin stars for this forthcoming winter season. Newly listed restaurant include: Restaurant HATO – Fine Asian Cuisine (St. Moritz, 15 Gault Millau points), Che Cha Restaurant & Club (Salastrains, 13 Gault Millau points), Sunny Bar by Claudia Canessa (Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, 13 Gault Millau points), Chesa Veglia (Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, 15 Gault Millau points) and Gianottis Wilderei (Pontresina, 13 Gault Millau points).

St. Moritz delights
The Carlton Hotel in St. Moritz has secured the services of Graziano Caccioppoli as its new chef de cuisine. At the Restaurant Romanoff the 32-year-old head chef will be treating diners to authentic Swiss cuisine and classic international dishes. On 7 and 8 December 2018 the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel will be delighting its patrons with star chef Andrea Berton from Milan. At the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski an Indian speciality chef and a sushi chef will be conjuring their culinary wizardry. New head chef Marco Kind is welcoming guests at the Restaurant Chasellas (Suvretta House). After his successful winter last year Tim Raue is offering evenings of fine dining at his exclusive restaurant The K by Tim Raue at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. Local chef Daniel Müller is welcoming guests in his capacity as chef de cuisine and host at the fashionable Restaurant Kulm Country Club St. Moritz. The premises themselves were designed by Lord Norman Foster (opened in 2017). The menus feature good home cooking, with an emphasis on Italian-Mediterranean cuisine with Asian influences.

The St. Moritz scene
The Restaurant and Bar Balthazar St. Moritz and its host Allegra Gucci are to delight their guests with Italian fine dining with an international twist. The new restaurant promises moments of pure luxury, its urban interior concept providing the ideal setting to while away the hours. Cult chef Reto Mathis at the Che Cha Restaurant & Club offers connoisseurs not just breathtaking views but also a unique and creative menu. At 2,181 m above mundane life, guests can savour the el paradiso as a daytime restaurant and event location. This year the el paradiso is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Mountain Club. Well worth a visit, in the very heart of St. Moritz, is the snug yet delightful Restaurant Dal Mulin, serving accomplished honest home cooking with a distinctively alpine note.

St. Moritz delights with new hotel rooms
With forty newly refurbished rooms the 4-star Hotel Steffani in St. Moritz is scheduled to open for the winter season on 1 December 2018. The Kulm Hotel St. Moritz is also launching into its winter season with new rooms in Mittelkulm on 6 December 2018. Interior designer Pierre Yves Rochon has lent the rooms and suites a breathtaking flair. The refurbishment is in fact the most extensive phase of room renovations in the history of the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz.

Prestigious art in St. Moritz
As part of the grand opening of the new Galerie Hauser & Wirth in St. Moritz two sculptures are to be sited and presented at the lake of St. Moritz on 27 December 2018 for the duration of the winter season. These prestigious artworks are by American artist Paul McCarthy and internationally acclaimed artist Bharti Kher. The Halde Galerie is set to welcome art enthusiasts from 7 December 2018. The gallery is located in the Suvretta House St. Moritz and specialises in contemporary art. Last summer, Montblanc Art Bags were set up in front of the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski as part of the St. Moritz Art Masters 2018. They are on display in front of the Hotel once again this coming winter for guests to admire.  

St. Moritz top events
The first top event to be held on the Corviglia, St. Moritz’s local mountain, gets underway with the AUDI FIS Ski World Cup St. Moritz (8 to 9 December 2018). This time it features a world premiere as St. Moritz is to stage a women’s parallel slalom event for the first time in the history of the Alpine World Cup. The Swiss Championships are to be held on the Olympia Bob Run on 29 and 30 December 2018. Amateurs of fine dining are already looking forward to the traditional St. Moritz Gourmet Festival (11 to 19 January 2019) with forty culinary events, this time featuring nine stellar chefs from Europe and Asia. There has also been a changing of the guard at the organisational level, along with changes in the festival organisation itself, with Fabrizio Zanetti now appointed as new executive chef in charge of organising the Festival. He replaces Reto Mathis, who has played an active part in the Gourmet Festival for twenty-five years (as founding member and long-serving president). The event calendar also features the Concours Hippique St. Moritz from 13 to 20 January 2019 and, from 17 to 19 January 2018, the classic WinterRAID, which is guaranteed to delight enthusiasts with a vintage car rally. The frozen lake of St. Moritz is also the perfect setting for international events: with the 35th Snow Polo World Cup (25 to 27 January 2019) and the legendary White Turf St. Moritz horse races (3/10/17 February 2019). The Cresta Run celebrates its Grand National on 16 February 2019, and fans of cross-country skiing are already training hard for the Engadin Ski Marathon (10 March 2019).

Top of the World lifestyle
On 6 December 2018 the King’s Club (Badrutt’s Palace Hotel) opens with a new dining and dancing concept, featuring renowned DJs. For anyone looking for an adrenaline kick, a ‘taxi ride’ down the ice track of the Olympia Bob Run is just the ticket (16 December 2018 – 3 March 2019). Hurtling down the ice track at 130 km/h in a four-man bob is an unforgettable experience, later to be toasted with a delightful glass of champagne. Those looking to start the day with a highlight should sign up for the Piz Nair Sunrise Event (20 December 2018/17 February 2019/3 March 2019). A gondola ride up to the summit of the Corviglia, the Piz Nair, even before the official operating times get underway is now on offer for the first time in the winter season. It’s certainly the best way to witness the spectacular sunrise at 3,000 metres above sea level before enjoying a generous breakfast at the Panorama Restaurant. The Piz Nair Sunrise is open to all; a valid ticket and prior registration are required. Enjoy afternoon tea in luxurious comfort at one of the five 5-star hotels in St. Moritz or take a horse-drawn carriage ride to one of the enchanting side valleys.
